On a mission to make and grow disciples

Learn English with HCI

Young women, newly-weds, older women, grandmothers, new arrivals, old hands, Indian, Pakistani, Ethiopian, Polish, all with three things in common – women, of ethnic minorities, and wanting to improve their English. That’s where I come in. I’m Maureen, a recently retired EFL teacher delighted to be involved with Harper Community Initiative to engage with the community and build relationships with local people through teaching English.

The women live locally, drop children at school and nursery, and are ready to learn. They need a class at a convenient time and location -that’s where the café comes in. Kinning Perk Coffee Shop (another Harper Initiative) is ‘just around the corner’. It’s warm, cosy and friendly. It’s not a church, it’s not a classroom!

We gather in the cafe on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings while the café is serving customers. We talk, laugh, translate, drink tea, laugh, talk, laugh, all the while learning the basics of the English language. With up to 14 women attending and some volunteers from the church ably assisting, progress in English is being made but the spin offs from the class are even better. We have made new friends, we have been introduced to other community projects, some have gained enough confidence to volunteer in other places and Harper Church is engaging with the community. The relationship building is happening! It’s exciting!
